The Delaware State men’s basketball team got a 21-point showing from the bench, but fell 79-66 to the Seattle U Redhawks at Ocean Center Saturday.
Raymond Somerville led the Hornets (15-19) with eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Deywilk Tavarez also added 15 points and five assists and Khyrie Staten helped out with five points and three steals off the bench.
Delaware State forced 14 Seattle U turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Staten’s three steals led the way for Delaware State.
After falling behind 5-2, Delaware State went on a 12-0 run with 17:24 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Somerville, to take a 14-5 lead. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 34-33.
Seattle U kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 58-43 advantage before Delaware State went on an 8-0 run to shrink the deficit to 58-51 with 9:38 to go in the contest. Seattle U responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 79-66. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 17 of its 33 total points. The Delaware State bench came alive by adding 21 points to its scoring output. The Delaware State defense forced 14 turnovers.
